Gulf of Tonkin
It is also known as the Gulf of Bac Bo. It is identified as an arm of the South China Sea which is to its northwestern side.
Countries that border the gulf are Vietnam to the west, southern China to the north and east. The island of Hainan is to its east. Some of the major sea ports along the Gulf of Tonkin are Beihai of China and Haiphong of Vietnam.
There are many islands in the gulf. Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay has over ,000 islands. They form an island group to the northern part of the gulf. Some important islands are Cat Ba and Co To. Both are important tourist locations and attract a lot of travellers. Co To is a famous centre for pearls and oyster culturing.
The Cat Ba National Park has been named as a World Biosphere Reserve granted by the UNESCO. It has a National Park Museum which screens short films and documentaries about the Park and the fauna and flora related to it.
Another area for sightseeing is the Lan Ha gulf. Nearby there are about 400 odd islets and islands. There are facilities for sea kayaking, scuba diving, and surfing.
